SKEET

Skeet’s cell vibrated in the center console. He smiled when he saw Alex’s name flash on the screen.

Alex: change of plan come pick me up

Skeet: damnit Lex, one thing, I asked one thing

Alex: don’t blame Mack. It was me

Skeet: fucking know that

He wasn’t really mad, but he couldn’t stop teasing her. Mack had given him the heads up that she stayed at her apartment, so he was already heading to her.

Alex: just come here

Skeet: you promised

Alex: no. you ordered

Skeet: Lex…

Alex: I’ll go back to the loft with you

Alex: I promise

Alex: skeet?

Alex: SKEET?

Skeet chuckled to himself as he pulled into the lot behind her apartment. He was looking forward to getting her out of this section of town. He knew it was the new trendy, up-and-coming area, but it was still not quite transitioned into a safe enough neighborhood. And he worried about her here. He knew she could handle anything that came her way, but he wanted her where he knew she would be safe. He guessed he had a little of Tuc’s neanderthal gene. He looked down when his phone vibrated again.

Alex: V… I swear…

Skeet smiled and turned the ignition off. He knew she would pull something, but he was ready for her this time. When he asked Mack why he left her here alone, he said What? You know how fuckin’ scary she gets, frogman. Yes, he did. It was one of the things he loved about her. Skeet was in and out of the shower and heading to her place within a half hour. He was actually glad she had done it. Now he got to spend all afternoon alone with her before the final walk-through for their occupancy certificate at the new office tomorrow.

Alex: R U really mad?

He smiled. No. He wasn’t mad, but he was worried about her getting mixed up in this shit. About Tuc losing it after so many months of hard work, the last thing he needed was to regress. And about Josh. How was this going to go tomorrow? His phone buzzed again.

Alex: okay. guess u r

Skeet: open your damn door

She pulled the door open so fast that a breeze pulled her hair back.

“How did you get here so fast?”

“Because I know you.” Skeet pushed his way through her door and caught his breath. The house smelled like food. Delicious fucking food. Tall candles burned on the table, and smaller tea lights flickered throughout her small apartment. The table was set for a romantic dinner for two.

“Surprise?” She looked and him and seemed shy. And wait, was that a blush? Then his eyes took the rest of her in. Alex was in a dress. A short, flowy, fuck me until I can’t stand in these heels anymore dress. She stood fidgeting in the small break between the kitchen and the table set for an intimate dinner. He had never seen Alex fidget before. It was so damn cute. But he’d never tell her that. That shit would not be cute.

“What’s all this?” He couldn’t keep the smile from his voice.
